One might say that, as a Nutritional Therapy practitioner, I have a slight obsession with hair tissue mineral analysis, otherwise known as HTMA. This functional test has become one of my clients' favorites. It offers insights into digestive health, thyroid function, adrenal health, inflammation, heavy metal toxicity, mineral imbalances, immune function, health and nutrition, and more. The best part is that the HTMA is affordable and provides incredibly valuable insight pertaining to the cellular level and optimizing your nutritional health.
What is an HTMA?
HTMA is a screening test that uses soft tissue mineral biopsies (from hair) measure intracellular mineral levels and heavy metal deposition in the hair.
Hair is body tissue in which minerals are deposited in specific patterns. This provides me with a blueprint for your unique body's biochemistry. Hair tells your nutritional history and has proven to be an effective way to glimpse how your body responds to your environment (nutrition, toxicity, stress, metabolic process, and more).
The Importance of Minerals
Minerals are the spark plugs in life's chemistry. They work synergistically with vitamins and other co-factors to allow all biochemical reactions.
Nutrient mineral levels and their relationships to other nutrients (ratios) determine how well your cells function and impact physical and cognitive performance. This means I never view minerals in isolation.
What can cause a mineral imbalance?
Many of our everyday choices can contribute to mineral imbalance,s such as stress, our food choices and low levels of mineralsl found in soil depletion, toxins in the environment, lack of sleep, our drinking supply, certain medications and supplements, viral and bacterial infections and more. These imbalances can be at the root of our feeling "unwell" and "lack of energy."
As a nutritional therapy practitioner at Empowered Wellness With Stephanie, I believe in the power of holistic wellness to transform lives. My approach is rooted in the philosophy that everyone is unique and requires personalized care.
Mineral Imbalances and deficiencies may account for 80-90% of health issues. Addressing the mineral piece of your health puzzle through this simple, noninvasive test will go a long way toward lasting results that take you beyond surviving to thrive, especially if you've already tried cleaning up your diet and lifestyle and just aren't getting the results you want.
Utilizing the HTMA blueprint's information makes it possible to design an informed and targeted nutritional program with optimal health and nutrition that best supports your unique bio-individuality. This is why the one-size-fits-all diet doesn't work: Each of us has our own beautifully orchestrated blueprint of unique needs and requirements, and an HTMA can help provide the hard evidence and insight into your unique biochemistry, which can form the most supportive nutritional program for you at this time.
You'll see what's going on with your metabolism and know what foods are best for speeding it up or slowing it down. You'll also learn what individual, personalized diet your body needs based on your mineral imbalances, health, and nutrition. HTMA gives you the visual blueprint to focus on the best foods for your nutritional health, support your current metabolic rate, and provide essential minerals that may be imbalanced.
The HTMA can present mineral deficiencies and evaluate relative deficiencies and imbalances. Minerals can affect vitamins, and vice versa, both antagonistically and synergistically. The HTMA gives you the tools to assess how your minerals and nutritional health are—or are not—working together and how they can be best supported to function harmoniously to achieve optimal health and nutrition.
HTMA is a screening tool for heavy metals, including uranium, lead, mercury, cadmium, arsenic, aluminum, and nickel. HTMA is a reliable guide to toxicity and is helpful in tracking detoxification progress and health and nutrition. The body has an inherent intelligence to detox, but our macro/micronutrient intake influences the body's ability to efficiently and effectively remove wastes and toxic substances. HTMA provides insight into how your body is processing toxicity and helps monitor detoxification
It is vital to support your hormones and hormonal balancing; these are your chemical messengers and how your body communicates. You may not realize that your hormonal function depends on your cellular ability to receive hormones. HTMA gives you a picture of how inviting your cells currently are (or are not) to hormone entry and gives you the information you need to take action and continue this communication.
As a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner, supporting mental health is vital to manifesting whole-body well-being. As such, you may not be aware of how much of a role minerals play in how you think and feel. Mineral deficiencies and heavy metal toxicities are commonly connected as contributors to mental health disorders, such as depression, anxiety, hyperactivity, and other mood disorders. HTMA provides you with the information to recognize if these imbalances are contributing to the why and how of the way you might be feeling and thinking.

Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA) is analytical test which measures the mineral content of the hair. The sampled hair, obtained by cutting the first inch and one-half of growth closest to the scalp at the nape of the neck, is prepared in a licensed clinical laboratory through a series of chemical and high temperature digestive procedures. Testing is then performed using highly sophisticated detection equipment and methods to achieve the most accurate and precise results.
Hair is the ideal tissue sampling and testing. First, it can be cut easily and painlessly and can be sent to the lab without special handling requirements. Second, clinical results have shown that a properly obtained sample can give an indication of mineral status and toxic metal accumulation following long term or even acute exposure.
A HTMA reveals a unique metabolic world: Intracellular activity, which cannot be seen through most other tests. This provides a blueprint of the biochemistry occuring during the period of hair growth and development.
Examples:
Hair is used as one of the tissues of choice by the Environmental Protection Agency in determining toxic metal exposure. A 1980 report from the E.P.A. stated that human hair can be effectively used for biological monitoring of the highest priority toxic metals. This report confirmed the findings of other studies in the U.S. and abroad, which concluded that human hair may be more appropriate tissue than blood or urine for studying community exposure to some trace elements.
Trace minerals are essential in countless metabolic functions in all phases of the process.
In other words of the late author and noted researcher Dr. Henry Schroeder, trace elements (minerals) are more important factors in human nutrition than vitamins. The body can manufacture many vitamins but it cannot produce necessary trace minerals or get rid of many possible excesses.
